It's All Fun And Games

For kids, it's all about fun and games. It's considered healthy for kids to play. What happens when we grow up? Why is play reserved for filling in a short lull in our schedule? I hear countless people say, "I used to play such and such when I was younger." Well why aren't you still playing? Has your physical health declined so much so that you can't play or are so over committed you can't possibly find the time?

Playing is healthy at any age, especially when you're an adult. As adults, we carry more responsibility and therefore, more stress. Playing house probably isn't going to have the same appeal as it once did, but there are many other forms of play to enjoy. Adults often refer to them as hobbies. So what are your hobbies? Please don't say watching TV, I can't place that in the hobby, play, or game category. Play often involves using your brain in some capacity and watching too much TV turns it into mush.

You might be wondering why I'm writing to you about the importance of play so here it goes.

Play keeps you young or at least younger at heart.
It relieves stress
Combats depression and anxiety
It exercises your mind
If physical, it has the same benefits of exercise
Helps with weight loss and weight management
It's a great way to socialize
You'll sleep better
You'll feel great about yourself
Creates a sense of well-being
You'll be healthier and happier

These are just a few of many benefits of play. I like the word play much better than hobbies. It sounds more fun, doesn't it?

I encourage you to have a few forms of play you enjoy on a regular basis. Incorporate some physical, relaxing and games that cause you to think. For example; Golf, reading, card games, and gardening could be  someone's list of fun (hobbies).

It's all part of living a healthy balanced life. Fun fits into the recreation category of life and notice what word is in recreation. Re-create. It's a part of re-creating you on a regular basis, keeping you healthy. Need some ideas?
