How many times have you made a decision to make a change for the better and it seems like everyone is against you? The roadblocks are thrown in front of you and your new found commitment to health and happiness seems like the wrong decision. I think we've all been there. Sometimes it's the people who are closest to us that seem to disapprove the most. Next thing you know, your excitement is gone, your self-esteem has taken a huge blow and you're questioning whether you made a good choice. You're wondering why the heck getting healthy and pursuing your dreams is a bad thing. Are they off their rockers or is it just me? They're not off the rockers and it isn't you. Some people aren't will to change themselves so they don't want you to change either. It's as simple as that. Stop letting people, including yourself derail you. Here's how.
Hire a Coach. A Coach is the most valuable tool you can have in your tool box. When it seems all the powers of hell are against you, you Coach will be for you reaching you dreams. A Coach will help you set goals, get a plan into place, stick to that plan, cheer you on, celebrate with you, pick you up when you need it, hold you accountable, help you to recognize roadblocks and help you break through.
Have a solid plan with specific goals in place. Want to lose weight? How will you do it? What tools will you use? You'll need an exercise program, a food plan, and a plan for renewing your mind. It's important to be specific with your goals. This breaks the mountain down into hills and the hills down into bumps. Successful people know where they're going and how to get there.
Guard your dreams. Not everyone will support you. If you have a well meaning friend who wants to play devils advocate, don't share with that friend. Share only with the people in your life who are for you living healthy and happy. You just might find out who your real friends are and aren't. That's ok. Not everyone is ready to move forward in life.
Set boundaries. Boundaries help to protect yourself in a healthy way. You don't have allow people to put you down, discourage you, tell you you're making a mistake, etc. You are responsible for you and no one else. Let these people know gently that you appreciate their concern but you have a solid plan in place and you don't feel the need to talk with them about it. You will obviously choose your own verbiage but you get the idea. If you need help in this area, the book Boundaries is fabulous.
Get into a healthy accountability group. It can be a local one or there are a ton of great support groups on Facebook. You'll meet other people with similar goals and make new friends.
Don't give up! Successful people realize you have to fall before you can rise. You never know when you'll make it to the top if you give up. Most people give up right before the succeed. Very few actually make it. Be the one that follows the narrow path, that climbs the mountain, that goes through the valley, that sweats, that presses through until they've reached their dream!
You're Worth It!
