Using herbs to balance hormones naturally can often seem impossible, especially when you’re on the hormone roller coaster. You know what I’m talking about; moody, anxious, sleepless, cravings, weight gain, menstrual pain, hot flashes, low libido, migraines, and on and on. Can you relate? I know I can.

The great news is (insert drum roll), balancing our hormones isn’t as difficult as we imagine. It just takes knowing what will work for your individual needs. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol and rolling the dice isn’t a good idea. It’s always best to work with a qualified practitioner who specializes in herbal remedies.

I like to incorporate as many hormone-balancing foods as I can along with herbs and supplements when needed to help support my body.

There are so many herbs that can help with balancing hormones. The following are the most common ones and some of my favorites.

Chaste Tree Berries- May help with menstrual cycle problems and pain, PMS, and menopause. Chaste tree berries may also help stimulate progesterone. . Vitex may work to help naturally balance the body’s hormones by way of regulating the pituitary. By regulating the pituitary it has an effect on the function of the other glands involved in this system. The pituitary sends out the signal to the other glands to tell them when and how much hormone to produce.  If the pituitary is not balanced properly this will effectively throw off the balance of the other glands.

Black Cohosh – This herb is believed to help reduce hot flashes associated with menopause, it also helps with anxiety which is very common during this phase. Studies have shown that Black Cohosh can relieve night sweats as well.

Red Raspberry Leaf – This herb is best known for its uterine strengthening properties. This wonderful herb is a rich source of vitamins and minerals particularly vitamin C.. It has been known to help increase fertility in both men and women and help decrease heavy blood flow and painful menstrual cramps. It makes a great-tasting tea.

Milk Thistle – This is one of my all-time favorite herbs for a multitude of health imbalances. Milk Thistle is one of the best liver cleansing herbs and a healthy liver is vital for hormone balance. Many women have an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone because of it. What many people don’t know is that excess estrogens get filtered out of the body through the liver. If the liver is congested and stagnant the body cannot eliminate these excess estrogens and they can re-enter the body causing imbalance and more.

Oatstraw – Oatstraw may strengthen the nerves, calm the body, strengthen the blood, stabilize moods, strengthen digestion, soothe the stomach, balances the endocrine system or those hormone-producing glands, supports the skeletal system due to its abundance of bio-available calcium, magnesium, and silica, and calms the central nervous system.

It is a good idea to work with a professional practitioner before taking herbs to balance hormones naturally. This way you can make sure that they will bring balance and not cause any more problems.
